Dim Sum Scanner
Privacy Policy
Dim Sum Scanner is designed to work entirely on your device. It does not collect personal information, require an account, or transmit menu images or scan results to any server.
What the app accesses
- Camera: used for live menu scanning. Frames are processed on-device by an OCR library and are never uploaded or stored.
- Photo library: used when you choose to scan a saved menu image or add a photo to a custom dish. Photos are read locally and not sent anywhere.
- Microphone access is disabled. Location access is not requested.
What is stored on your device
- Favorite dish IDs saved so your picks persist between sessions.
- Custom dishes you create, including English and Chinese names, category, optional notes, and any photo you attach.
- Your scanner language preference.
- A local cache of dish images downloaded from Wikimedia Commons so repeated lookups are served offline.
- All data lives in app-sandboxed storage on your device. Nothing is backed up to a server.
Third-party services
- Wikimedia Commons: dish reference photos are fetched by file name and cached locally on first use. No personal information is sent.
- Google ML Kit: a translation model (~30 MB) is downloaded once to your device to translate menu modifier text offline. After the initial download, translation runs fully on-device with no further network calls.
- Expo Updates: the app checks for over-the-air updates using Expo infrastructure. No user data is included in these requests.
What is not collected
- No account or sign-in is required.
- No analytics, crash reporting, or usage tracking is integrated.
- No advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking.
- No personal information such as name, email, or payment details.
- No location data.
Data retention
All data is stored locally and persists until you delete the app or clear its storage. Session scan results are held in memory only and cleared when you close the app.
